Black - Eyed Susan and Crab Sugar Cookies with Royal Icing

Sugar cookies celebrating the fabulous state of Maryland.

Our state flower - the Black-Eyed Susan.

Our state crustacean - the Blue Crab.  I always think that it's funny that we have a "state crustacean".  I wonder if any other state has one.

These crabs are no longer blue.  I suppose they represent the crabs as seen just before digging in at a crab feast!

Some of my fondest childhood memories involve the Black-Eyed Susan and crabs.

Every summer, we spent time at my Aunt and Uncle's house on a river.  We spent long days on the boats water-skiing, hours exploring, and running through cornfields.  At night, we'd pile into the jeep, wave and holler "Howdy neighbor" at anyone we'd see.  Yep, that was a highlight for me.

We always had crabs.  My dad and uncle would pick up those snapping guys with their hands.  I thought they were so brave.  I was too scared to go near them.

Then it would be hours and hours of crab picking.  All of the kids were expected to pick their own and not to waste one bit of meat.  We were to pick them clean before taking another.

At my uncle's house is where I fell in love with the Black-Eyed Susan.  During one of our adventures, we saw some Black-Eyed Susans.  I wanted to pick them, but was stopped by my cousin, telling me that it was illegal.  A flower so special that it was illegal to pick?  I was in love.

All these years later, I have no idea if it truly is illegal to pick Black-Eyed Susans or if it's just illegal to pick any flower that's not on your own property.  Back then, and for most of my life, that thought never even occurred to me.  All I knew was that it was "our" flower, it was protected, and I loved them.

When I got a house and had my very own garden, the Black-Eyed Susan was one of the first flowers to go in. I could pick them anytime I want.  A childhood dream come true.  We've moved to a new house and guess what had to go in this garden too?  I love these very special flowers!

Graduation Sugar Cookies with Royal Icing

These were for a mother and daughter, both graduating from college.  Luckily their two schools each had the same colors - blue and gold.  The red was thrown in for good measure.

Actually, the red was thrown in because of the ever-present crabs.  I felt the need to spread that red around on a few other cookies.  It was a nice, bold color for the message and names.

The daughter graduated from a school on Maryland's eastern shore - hence the crabs and sailboats.

I was not happy at all with the graduation cap cookies.  I had the proportions way off.  The top of the hat should have been larger and the bottom should have been smaller.

Apparently I only took photos of Alyssa's cookies.  There were some for Cheryl.  And a few for a friend - Jonathan.  About 15 dozen cookies total.  Must have been quite the party!

Wedding Sugar Cookies

I've been busy making up sample cookie designs for weddings. I showed you one for a beach wedding.

Now for the rest. I wanted them to be clean. Classic. Neutral. Elegant.

Quilted hearts.  I'm unsure about the dots around the border (not just on these but on all of them).  The dots aren't exactly "clean".  I wonder if no border at all would be better.  Or the dots matching the background.  Hmmmm.

I also wonder if a plain square shape would be better.  No scallops.

My Maryland crab cookies.  I've made these so many times.  Never in white though.

I always have cratering on these guys.  So very annoying.

Paisley cookies.  I did these with a stencil and petal dust.

The bunting cookie is one of my favorites.

Brushed embroidery flowers.  So pretty.  Sooooo time consuming.  I've watched many videos on brush embroidery.  SweetAmbs has one, as well as AliBee.

The grey and white flowers were done with icing.  The black one is painted on with food coloring.  I prefer the ones in icing.  More texture and dimension.

Love birds.  Another one that I've made several times, but not in white and grey.  This is SweetP's design.

Now this one might be my very favorite.  I painted the roses with food coloring.  I love the shabby chic look.  This design was inspired by Arty McGoo and SweetAmbs.  Arty McGoo taught us how to paint "squiggle roses" at Cookie Con.  SweetAmbs has a video showing how to do it.

The painting was soooo fun.  It was hard to stop!

It's time to start planning spring and summer weddings.  I hope that some of these designs will make a few wedding appearances!

Catching Up

I've got a backlog of cookie photos that I haven't had time to post.  These are cookies that I made a few weeks ago.

A retired teacher reunion.  Scrabble cookies with the school's initials . . .
Edit:  I should have mentioned that I used this video tutorial on University of Cookie for the wood grain.
Minis in the school's colors . . .
And the whole platter . . .

A gender reveal party for a Maryland baby.  Pink and blue crabs.  I just love that people are wanting crab cookies for baby celebrations!
The platter . . .
A couple at the party recently got engaged, so we needed a couple of hearts just for them . . .

Poker cookies.  These were for a friend that hasn't been feeling well.  I almost didn't give them to him.  The poker chips were riddled with craters and they bled!  I've never had bleeding before or cratering that bad.  I chose the best of them to photograph.  I really should have photographed the worst of them too.  It was an embarrassment but I figured that they would still cheer him up.

Maryland Blue Crab Sugar Cookies with Royal Icing

These were for a little boy baby shower.  Brilliant, right?  I'd never thought of using crabs for a baby, but he's a future Marylander, so why not?  Start 'em early!  How cute would these be in pink for a baby girl?

Regular sized crabs.

Itty bitty mini crabs.

You can see the size difference here.

And here....an army of minis!  That's 48!

Summer Fun Sugar Cookies with Royal Icing

These cookies would be terrific for a picnic, barbeque, crab feast, or trip to the beach!

Ice cream cones, watermelon wedges, sunglasses, the sun and of course crabs and mini crabs!

In case you didn't guess, the sun was made from a flower cutter.  Still looks like a flower, huh?  I think I need a sun cutter!

Flowers and Insects Platter - Sugar Cookies and Royal Icing

My neighbor needed a "thank you" platter.  (Hi ML!)  She gave me complete freedom to do what I wanted.  Love that!

Her request . . . girly, flowers, insects, summery, lots of minis.  Mission accomplished?  I think so.  I do love how it came out and it was so fun to decorate.  This has to be my favorite platter yet.

The flowers were plentiful.

Caterpillars, snails and butterflies were there to represent the insects.

Birds were there to, um, look cute.  The strawberries too.  (Isn't artistic license grand?)

I was super pleased with the plaque.  I inserted a mini flower up on the top.  Dressed it up a bit I think.

I've got to remember to do that with other minis!
I was so glad that she wanted a lot of minis.  They're always my favorite.

What?  Crabs aren't insects?  But we live in Maryland, and they're adorable, and I couldn't resist.  It's the whole artistic license thing again.

What again?  Crabs have legs?  Haven't you ever seen a crab missing a claw or leg?  Well this guy apparently lost 6 legs.  Artistic license?

Ok, I forgot to pipe his legs.  Dang it.  You would think that if I hadn't noticed while decorating, I would have noticed while he was front and center in all of the photos I took of the minis.  Sheesh.

Girly, flowers, insects, summery, lots of minis?  Check.

Birds, strawberries, and legless crabs?  Check.

Tutorial - How to make Crab Sugar Cookies with Royal Icing

"Maryland is for Crabs!" Quite a slogan, huh? When I was a kid, tshirts with that motto were all over the place.

Crabbing and eating crabs is a summer tradition around here. Does any other state actually have an official "State Crustacean"? I dont' know, but we do - the Maryland Blue Crab.

So in honor of our adored crabs, I made cookies. When I saw the cutters, I just had to have them.  It's early yet for a crab feast, but I wanted to make just a few cookies to see how they'd turn out.

I'm in love with these little guys. Look at those minis!  Minis get me every time.

I was slightly intimidated before I started decorating them. I wasn't quite sure how to go about it.

I started by outlining with black.  Then just flooded each section with red.   They were really easy!

To simplify things even more, I think that outlining with red would be super cute too!

I know what I'll be bringing to the next crab feast!  Can't wait!
